2009 my year of Travel & Growth
As 2009 begins to wind down ready for the New Year - 2010 - I am reflecting on the theme 2009 has had for me.
It was January 09 when I was invited to Europe for a family wedding. One of my triplet brothers (My Mums' 2nd marriage) was planning to marry his Polish lady on the 1st weekend of September in Poland. Naturally I was thrilled by the idea of joining the celebration and welcoming a new Sister-in-law into the familly. Plus Poland was my Dads' home country (he died in 1992) and somewhere I always wanted to visit.
The flight out of Brisbane and over the top end of Australia, with a stopover in Singapore was an exquisite opportunity to view everything from the air. My window seat afforded me much more entertainment than any movie or magazine article onboard the plane. As I flew into Heathrow Airport a new day was just beginning. My Brother was there to pick me up, and I spent a busy 2weeks exploring as much of London and Southern England as possible. Highlights for me included Cambridge, Stonehenge and the Wiltshire area, along with the Chelsea Psychic Gardens and Camden Markets.
When leaving England for Poland, I was lucky to have another window seat - we flew over Northern France, Germany, and then into Krakow Airport. After a 2hour car trip we reached the ski village of Zakopane - a beautiful place near a state forrest. The houses were mostly made of local stone and huge pine sleepers - some carved beautifully from local timber. Very little English was spoken anywhere in this area, and we couldn't do much without a translator. The wedding was quite traditional - with horse-drawn carriages to the cute little church; a ceremony totally in Polish and a reception with food and entertainment unique to this culture.
I would love to return to many of the places visited this trip - to stay longer and experience more. But by the time I found myself back at Heathrow, and 'flying out' to return home - I knew had 'tasted' enough of Europe for now.
Arriving back on the Gold Coast of Australia - I was amazed at how bright everything was!! We certainly live in a beautiful sun-drenched country - one could say - we are literally 'living in the light'.
